Dr Hendrik van der Bijl - The Man Who Built South Africa

The MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN THE HISTORY OF SOUTH AFRICA and AFRICA as a whole and my greatest hero and role-model, without whom South Africa would still have been in the middle ages.

Dr. Hendrik van der Bijl, MA, Ph.D., MAIE, MIRE. Chancellor of the Univ. of Pretoria 1934 - 1948.

No other person in the history of South Africa made a greater contribution to this country, generally, than Dr. Hendrik van der Bijl.

He founded ARMSCOR while serving as director-general of war supplies;
He founded the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC);
He founded the South African shipping company (Safmarine, now part of A.P. Moller-Maersk Group);
He obtained a PhD with a thesis on the behaviour of pure liquid under the influence of radioactivity;
He was Chancellor of the University of Pretoria from 1934 to 1948; 
He is the father of 'Electron Tube Theory';
He developed the thermionic vacuum tube, which enabled wireless telephony to be transmitted over a distance of 4 800 km;
His research led to his treatise entitled The Thermionic Vacuum Tube and Its Applications. This became the standard textbook on the subject for more than 20 years and remains the standard reference work on the subject to this day. This research led to the use of these tubes in radio communication. The first successful transmission of speech by radio was made in 1915. Later that year speech was transmitted by radio over a distance of more than 8 000 km. Van der Bijl managed to get the amplifiers to work to the precise tolerances required over this very long distance.
He assisted in the development of intercontinental telephony and of radio communication between land and aeroplanes;
In the 1940s he developed a method of recording sound using photographed waveforms on 35mm film, which were passed across and interrupted a steady beam of light, and thus generated an electronic impulse to represent sound;
His work contributed to the development of the transistor, which changed the world forever;
In 1940 he was made an external member of the United States Institute of Radio Engineers, of which he became deputy chairman in 1944.
In 1946 he was asked to act as arbitrator between the British government and the British steel industry.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
One of his last activities was the chairmanship of the Van der Bijl Engineers' Corporation (1947).

South Africa's industrial history began with the discovery of gold and diamonds during the last century, and the mining industry was the first chief component of our technological development. During the past six decades, quantum leaps were made in other fields, too, when other industries and research bodies such as Escom, NDC, Iscor, Sasol, Foskor, Alusaf, Mintek, cs I R, SA B S, and A E C were established. These meaningful additions have two outstanding characteristics. Firstly, they were linked mainly to primary activities such as energy and minerals and, secondly, their establishment was to a large extent due to the driving force of individuals such as Hendrik van der Bijl, van Eck, Rossouw, Schonland, and Roux, rather than to impersonal government policy. 

Hendrik van der Bijl said - "it is not the Government’s function to do everything for its people, but that it is it's duty to create conditions that will encourage enterprise, not the type of enterprise that results in the unfair enrichment of some at the expense of others, but enterprise that results in equitable distribution of all the benefits."

The Hendrik van der Bijl Memorial Lectures
The Hendrik van der Bijl Memorial Lecture is delivered annually by a leading personality under the general theme of the role of engineering in society. It is arranged under the auspices of the South African Academy of Engineering and the University of Pretoria (of which Dr Van der Bijl was Chancellor from 1934 to 1948) to commemorate the great contribution he made to the industrial, engineering and scientific development of South Africa. The first Hendrik van der Bijl Memorial Lecture was delivered in 1963 by Dr M S Louw and since then the lecture has been delivered by many eminent South Africans. (see the list of names HERE)

Hendrik van der Bijl (1887 - 1948)
Hendrik van der Bijl was born in Pretoria in 1887 and attended school in the Cape Province during the Anglo Boer War. After studying at the Victoria College in Stellenbosch, he continued his studies in Physics in Germany and obtained his Ph.D degree at the University of Leipzig, specializing in Electronics. His successful research lead to an appointment as Instructor of Physics in Dresden in 1912 and soon thereafter he was invited to join the American Telegraph and Telephone Co. in New York where he became one of a selected group of engineering research scientists that spearheaded American technological development.

In answer to a call by General Smuts, van der Bijl returned to South Africa in 1920 as Technical Adviser to the South African Government and in the second quarter of the twentieth century he laid the foundations for the development of the South African industry. After studying the economic conditions in the country, he concluded that cheap electric power, cheap steel and financial and technical assistance to the developing industries were prerequisites to further development. This led to him being the architect and Chairman of Escom, Iscor and the Industrial Development Corporation. Then followed an association of Iscor with private enterprise, in Amcor, for the beneficiation of South Africa's base minerals and in Van der Bijl Engineering for the establishment of a heavy engineering industry.

During the second world war Hendrik van der Bijl was appointed first as Director General of War Supplies and later as Director General of Supplies. His outstanding organizing ability and his leadership qualities enabled him to use this opportunity to stimulate and direct this into the second stage of rapid industrial development in South Africa.

In later years Dr Van der Bijl turned his attention to the private sector of the economy. One outcome of this was the establishment in 1947 of Safmarine, of which he was the first Chairman.

The foundations for the industrial development of South Africa were laid by Hendrik van der Bijl the Engineer / scientist, industrial leader and entrepreneur. His achievements have been recognized internationally and locally. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and he received honorary degrees from both the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Witwatersrand.

The Hendrik van der Bijl lecture is delivered by a leading personality under the general theme of the role of engineering in society.

The following article demonstrates the importance of vd Bijl, not only to South Africa, but to the continent as a whole and even though he is not mentioned int the article, without vd Bijl Africa would still have been in darkness.

"As I have mentioned my radio engineering bibles when I was a student were Terman's two books. In them I learned about high efficiency modulators and oscillators for high power radio transmitters, developed in the 1920's, by an engineer called v.d. Bijl. It was many years later that I realized that he was the same man who, by extraordinary vision and foresight, laid out the blueprint whereby a small country could rapidly industrialize itself, and who is honoured in the naming of the city of v.d. Bijl Park near Vereeniging. 

Hendrik v.d. Bijl was a genius of the highest order. To electrical engineers, he is seen in one light. To industrialists another. He was undoubtedly the "father" of modern industrial South Africa. Someone once explained to me (I think I was my brother's father in law, Ignatius de Villiers, who was at that time Chief Engineer of Eskom) where his stroke of genius lay. Industrial USA heavily influenced him. Under their law private monopolies are illegal. This was exemplified by the break up of ATT/Bell in between the war years when they were broken in two to create as a rival ITT as a competitor. v.d Bijl recognized the danger of government monopolies with an explosion of inefficient bureaucracy but also recognized that South Africa at the time was far too small to create competing private industries (the economically active population was only about 3,000,000). His genius was to establish a series of commissions which were private, but in which the government owned 51% of the shares. At first sight this would appear to be no different from a government monopoly. But not so. The commission might consist of three government nominees, but there would also be two private members that could scream from the rafters if bureaucratic excess started to develop. It was this factor which led to the extraordinary success of Iscor, Eskom, Phoskor and so on. The liberal party in the UK adopted his structure in the 1960's as the correct way to establish national industries. BP (British Petroleum) was structured the v.d Bijl way and has been a notable success."Professor Martin Wedepohl

EARLY YEARS
Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl, the second son of Pieter Gerhard van der Bijl was born on 23rd November 1887 in Pretoria, some 33 years after Scottish missionary David Livingstone first set eyes on the "The Smoke That Thunders" (the Victoria Falls). His parents were typical burghers of the Zuid Afrikaansche (i.e. Boer) Republic of the Transvaal. His father Pieter Gerhard van der Bijl was the seventh generation of the original Dutch van der Bijl family to be born in South Africa. The family had moved to Pretoria a few months before Hendrik was born. Pieter build up a successful business as a produce merchant and property investor. He became quite influential, counting among his many friends such well-known South African politicians and future Prime Ministers as Louis Botha, Jan Smuts, and Barry Hertzog.

Young Hendrik’s education was disrupted because of the Anglo-Boer War. He attended the Staatsch Model School in Pretoria, but the school was closed down and converted to a prisoner-of-war camp. (It was this camp from which young war correspondent Winston Churchill made his much-publicised escape during the early days of the war, just one day before he was to be released anyway.) After the fall of Pretoria in 1900, the family moved to Gordon's Bay and Hendrik was sent to Boys' High School at Franschhoek, from where he matriculated. The boy was interested in music and literature, and philosophy interested him deeply, but it was the exactness and logic of science that gave him great satisfaction, the application of which he held in even greater esteem. The boy did well at school and continued his studies at the Victoria College (today the University of Stellenbosch).

ACADEMIC YEARS
At Victoria College he excelled at physics, but in 1908, when he graduated it was with distinctions in mathematics and chemistry as well. He was also awarded a prize as best student in mathematics and physics.

In those days opportunities for a man of his talents were somewhat limited. He could either become a lecturer and later a professor of physics or join the Department of Agriculture.

On the other hand, he could further his studies in Europe. This he decided to do and as the German universities were considered leaders in the field of experimental physics, he went to Germany. Up to that stage his father had paid all his education fees, but stated clearly that further expenses were to be looked upon as a loan.

Van der Bijl first studied at Halle, later at the University of Leipzig and although the language was strange to him, it in no way hindered his academic achievements. Within two years, van der Bijl completed his thesis to prove an electron carried the same fundamental charge in ionised liquids as in gases. Impressed by his talent and dedication, his supervisor recommended him highly and he was offered the post of Assistant in Physics at the Royal School of Technology at Dresden. At the beginning of 1912, the 24 year-old van der Bijl took up his new duties, having left Leipzig with the degrees of Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.

The head of the Department of Physics at Dresden was Professor Hallwachs, the discoverer of the photoelectric effect. Hallwachs had observed that when ultra-violet light struck the surface of a metallic plate, some of the electrons were dislodged at high velocities. If Einstein's and Planck’s new quantum theories were correct, the wavelength of the light should be proportional to the maximum velocity of the electrons. However, several attempts to demonstrate this had so far proved fruitless. Hallwachs brought this perplexing problem to van der Bijl’s attention and suggested that he look into it. This led to van der Bijl’s paper entitled "Zur Bestimmung der Erstenergien lichtelektrisch ausgeslöster Elektronen" [The Determination of the Initial Energies of Photoelectrically Liberated Electrons] being published in April 1913.

BUSINESS CAREER
Just before the publication of his paper, van der Bijl met Robert Millikan, the eminent American physicist. Millikan was impressed with the young van der Bijl and recommended the young engineer to the Western Electric Company. Van der Bijl accepted their job offer and set out for New York.

His research at this company on the thermionic valve, which was developed by Dr Lee de Forest, led to his treatise entitled The Thermionic Vacuum Tube and Its Applications. It became the standard textbook on the subject for more than 20 years. This research led to the use of these tubes in radio communication. The first successful transmission of speech by radio was made in 1915. Later that year speech was transmitted by radio over a distance of more than 8 000 km. Van der Bijl managed to get the amplifiers to work to the precise tolerances required over this very long distance.

He married an American girl and during the First World War was approached by the American government to assist them with the defence system of the country. He was also associated with the Bell Telephone Laboratories and by 1917 had made significant contributions to the development of the photo-electric cell and by this means also to television. A book which he later published, remained a standard textbook on the subject for some 45 years. Hendrik van der Bijl was extensively honoured for his many engineering and scientific achievements.

RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA
General J C Smuts had assumed the reigns of government in South Africa. Smuts thought that a scientific adviser would be an asset to his Cabinet, and as van der Bijl’s fame had spread to the country of his birth, he was Smuts’ first choice.

Van der Bijl was persuaded to return to South Africa and in 1920 he left the United States. He was formally appointed as Scientific and Technical Adviser to the Department of Mines and Industries, but was directly responsible to the Prime Minister. At first his work was unrelated to electricity, but soon he started with plans for a public utility to provide the industries with cheap electricity.

The United States had given him plenty of opportunity of acquainting himself with this type of concern. "South Africa", he said, "cannot afford to be unmindful of the very great changes that are taking place in other countries. Once cannot help being impressed with the enormous industrial potentialities of this country".

Van der Bijl wanted to combine the advantage of a state-controlled undertaking with those of a public concern. The capital would be provided by the State and the company would be run on commercial lines. These ideas had already occurred to van der Bijl while in the United States.

ESCOM ESTABLISHED
In 1923 the Electricity Supply Commission (Escom) was founded. As Chairman, van der Bijl borrowed R16 million from the State and began putting his plans into action. From the outset the undertaking was success and within 10 years van der Bijl was able to pay back to the State loan.

Under his expert guidance Escom progressed form strength to strength and within a short period of time van der Bijl was able to fulfil his promise: South Africa was assured of sufficient inexpensive power for its fast-growing industries.

Hendrik van der Bijl had originally shaped the Office of the Chairman of Escom as an executive chairmanship. It was only while he ran the supplies directorate during World War II that George Harding and Percy Furness handled much of the day-to-day management of Escom. Towards the end of the war, van der Bijl resumed control when the expropriation of the Victoria Falls and Transvaal Power Company Limited (VFP) was raised, and he only appointed Harding and Furness joint General Managers (that is, executive officers) of Escom in 1948.

ISCOR ESTABLISHED
With Escom progressing so well, this far-sighted engineering scientist was able to direct his attention to the steel industry. Before long Escom had an industrial twin, namely Iscor (the South African Iron and Steel Corporation). In this instance the promise was to provide inexpensive steel for South Africa. In 1934 the first steel was produced.

WORLD WAR 2
During the Second World War, van der Bijl became Director-General of War Supplies and later Director of Supplies, appointments that afforded him the status of a Minister.

It was also during this period that he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, an honour he considered to be the greatest afforded him.

By the end of the war in 1945, Dr Hendrik van der Bijl could look back on 25 years devoted to serving his country. During this period he had been responsible for the founding of dynamic undertakings such as Escom, Iscor, Amcor, Vecor and the development of Vanderbijlpark. In this time he had been responsible for the rapid advance of his country along the paths of progress and prosperity. He was a man of vision and forcefulness who planned magnificently. The benefits of these attributes are being reaped in South Africa today.

He had relinquished a most promising career in the United States to be of service to the land of his birth.

HIS DEATH
Dr Hendrik van der Bijl, a truly great South African, passed away in 1948 while still in the prime of his life.

In our daily conversations, many of us believe that Africa would have been better off if it was left to its own devices to chat a development course that addressed its human and institutional challenges.

It is easy to blame colonialism, imperialism and globalisation for the current condition of Africa.

However, Africa may not be necessarily where it is on the development ladder just because of the complex interactions with other civilisations but also the inability of our generation to fully appreciate the true nature of the colonial state and the mindset that informed the choices made by the role players.

As we try to understand our present, we are compelled to look back and locate some of the innovations that have contributed significantly to the continent’s social and economic change.

We all take for granted electricity and its impact on the quality of human life and yet without it the condition of Africa would be a very different story.

For the privileged Africans, it is hard to imagine life without electricity and yet millions of Africans live without it.

The genesis of the electronic revolution was in Europe and Africa had little part to play in the history and development of electricity.

Electricity has been a challenge not only to engineers and scientists but lay persons for hundreds of years. We know it exists but it is difficult to explain what it actually is.

It is not visible and it cannot be stored. Although it has no weight, it can lift and move thousands of tons. It has no shape and yet it is everywhere. It is a form of energy that can be harnessed. Modern Africa could not exist without electricity.

There are two main types of electricity known i.e. static and current. If it was not for the work of people like Benjamin Franklin, Luigi Galvani, and Alessandron Volta, our world today would be different. We, therefore, need to acknowledge the contribution of non-Africans to our heritage.

Without their knowledge, capital and ability to convert ideas into practical things, Africa’s present condition would be different.

What is the history of electricity in Africa? It is recorded in the Encyclopaedia of Southern Africa that an electric device was first used in South Africa in 1809.

In 1860, the first electric telegraph system that operated between Cape Town and Simon’s Town was introduced so was an electric arc light demonstrated the same year on the African soil.

The local railway station in Cape Town was first illuminated by electricity in 1881 and the first telephone exchange was opened a year later in Port Elizabeth.

Cape Town’s Table Bay docks were first illuminated by electric arc lamps in April 1882 followed by the Cape Colonial Parliament in May 1882.

During the same year, Kimberley, the Diamond City, switched on electric streetlights making it the first city in Africa to use electricity in this manner.

The first electric power station was established in 1891 preceded by the use of electric motors, lights in mines, private lighting and an electric tram between 1884 and 1890.

With the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, Johannesburg installed its first electric plant in 1889 that generated power by gas engines.

An electric reticulation system followed in 1891 with municipal supplies being switched on in 1892 in Rondebosch, followed by Cape Town city centre in 1895, Durban in 1897, Pietermaritzburg in 1898, East London in 1899, Bloemfontein and Kimberley in 1900, and Port Elizabeth in 1906.

In 1892, hydropower was first generated in South Africa and this was followed by the installation and commissioning in 1896 of an overhead trolley-wire electric tram.

Siemens and Halske became the first independent power producer in Africa in 1889 when it was granted the concession to supply electricity to Johannesburg and Pretoria beginning operations in 1894 after obtaining a concession to transmit electricity to the mines of the Witwatersrand.

In 1895, the concession was ceded to The Rand Central Electric Works Limited which commenced commercial supply operations in Brakpan in 1897.

Pursuant to a Government Gazette of 6 March 1923, the Electricity Supply Commission (Escom) was established with effect from 1 March 1923 with Dr. Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl as its first Chairman. It is Africa’s largest producer of electricity.

South Africa will this year be the first African country to host the FIFA Soccer World Cup. It was also the first country to introduce electricity in the continent.

Electricity was introduced to meet market needs not for political expediency.

Investments in the power sector are lumpy. Before an investment is made one has to be confident that the target market would be willing and able to pay for the investment.

What is instructive about the South African experience is that such investments were domestically conceptualised with little or no input from the colonial office.

There was no expectation of external bilateral or multilateral financial and technical support. If there were mistakes, they were made by the actors who had to live with the consequences of their choices and actions.

At its foundation, the colonial state was meant to serve the needs of the people to whom it owed its existence.

Without enterprising and daring people, South Africa would not have scored a first. This is not to say that the political economic system that underpinned the business model was desirable and equitable.

What it means is that we should not take for granted our corporate heritage lest we lose the foundation that has made some part of Africa points of light while other parts remain in darkness.

Investments in electricity were not accidental but were deliberate. There are men and women who made it possible. It is through the experiences of these individuals that we can learn about what we need to do to extend the perimeter of light in Africa.

As we learn about our past we should critically examine what our obligations are in terms of institution and human capacity building. If the industrial pioneers of South Africa were small minded the outcome we see today in the country would show.

What occupied the minds of these pioneers? Their actions could not have been motivated by a desire to solely promote the interests of the mother country but a genuine desire to improve the quality of life of the people to whom they felt electricity meant something.

To a subsistence farmer, for instance, the meaning and value of electricity is different to a commercial farmer.

Electricity only has value to those with the means to pay for it. If you do not have the resources, it is a question of time before you plunge into darkness.

It is after all an expensive and risky game but ultimately someone has to pay.

To the extent that South Africa has scored many firsts in Africa, we need to know more about this 15-year old baby in Africa.

It is pregnant with lessons on how to build nation states. Once we discount the race-based approach to human civilization, we may find that the values, beliefs and principles that informed the choices made on industrial, agricultural and mining development may resonate need to be holistically understood.

Sadly, besides the fact that this great South African has never received the acclaim or recognition he truly deserves,  in post-1994 South Africa, being a white male Afrikaner, a man like Dr. Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl would not have achieved anything for the country, because the ANC Government's affirmative action policies, like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Transformation policies, would have excluded him from from the job market and prevented him from establishing any of the companies and organisations he founded in his day. He would probably not have returned or, if he had, he would have been forced to leave his country of birth.

4. ANALOGUE SAMPLING: PHOTOELECTRIC

Most of the photoelectric organs and organ-like instruments from the late 1920s and 1930s were based on the mechanism of a rotating disc that interrupted the passage of a beam of light between its source and a photocell (already used by Hendrik van der Bijl in 1916 and envisaged in 1921 by Hugoniot), thus avoiding the wear and tear of direct contact with the surface of the recording.

Kuhn:
But you know, it wasn’t explained within a couple of years. At least it wasn’t generally. The first time that Franck and Hertz publish anything which relates these experiments to the Bohr atom, is in 1919, five years or more after the experiment.
Loeb:
In this country we were ahead of them then. I didn’t realize that. Now let me give the picture as I see it. Van der Bijl was a British-trained Dutchman who was at the Bell Laboratories. And he was an exceedingly astute fellow. And he explained the operation of the low voltage mercury arc on the basis of multiple ionization. He pointed out also that the apparent ionization of these things must be due to a secondary photo-electric emission. And he pointed this out at that time. Now he may not have published it, but this was in discussions or in a seminar at Ryerson. When was the Bergen Davis and Goucher experiment published? … I can tell you this, at a Physical Society meeting in 1917, John T. Tate gave his maiden doctoral paper. It was this April meeting — I guess ‘18. He had awakened one after another of the spectral lines with a spectroscope at the Bohr potentials. So already in 1917 there was experimental proof that these were lines, line emission, and Van der Bijl, I am sure … was the one who suggested this, but Tate used a different technique. He used a spectroscopic technique, as I remember it. And this endeared Tate to me. When I listened to this, why this just popped out, there it was! Then Compton very early came out with the idea of using asymmetrical electrode systems and then differentiate the photo-effect. As I say, these wee inelastic impacts were received and this was quantum theory.

Kuhn:

What sort of contact would there have been between Van der Bijl at Bell, and (Ryerson)?
Loeb:
Millikan was very closely tied in with Bell Labs. I think they offered him the job of director, and his outstanding Ph.D., Jewett, one of the first few (somochromes) from Ryerson, took the directorship there. He kept very close to Millikan, and Millikan was continually consulted. Chicago was just as California now or began to be with the cyclotron and the developments and Birge — a mecca for visiting scientists. So in those days, everybody came to Chicago. And Millikan of course was a tremendous drawing card. So Van der Bijl spent some time around there. I mean I got to know him personally very well. He was the one who did probably the best engineering scientific work, and wrote the first book on the amplifier and oscillator tubes. Before that you’d had de Forrest and (Winters) and everything had been cloaked in secrecy. Van der Bijl was a top-notch engineering scientist. Then he went down to South Africa and became director of their South African research group, and he died very early. He was a very able man.

L.D. Landau's phenomenological and semi-microscopic theory of superfluidity of helium-4 earned him the Nobel Prize in physics, in 1962. To explain the early specific heat data on superfluid helium-4, Landau posited the existence of a type of excitation he called a "roton", but as better data became available he considered that the "roton" was the same as a high momentum version of sound.
Landau thought that vorticity entered superfluid helium-4 by vortex sheets, but such sheets have since been shown to be unstable. Lars Onsager and, later independently, Feynman showed that vorticity enters by quantized vortex lines. They also developed the idea of quantum vortex rings. Hendrik van der Bijl in the 1940s, and Richard Feynman around 1955, developed microscopic theories for the roton, which was shortly observed with inelastic neutron experiments by Palevsky.



To leave or not to leave SA: that is the question

Sadly I never saved the link to this article and do not recall the name of the author, but it remains worth reading.
I saved the article in text format in September 2010

Have you ever thought about leaving South Africa? Do you feel like spitting on someone who would even consider it? Or have you already left?

At one point or another, I've been all three. So perhaps that's why I've found "Should I stay or should I go", a collection of writing about leaving South Africa (or, in some cases, returning or staying put), has a special resonance.

The stories are always riveting, always compelling, sometimes infuriating. Andre Brink's piece was written after the brutal murder of his nephew. He wrote why he chose, in the aftermath of such a tragedy, to stay in South Africa. Brink harbours no illusions about this country - and he captures, with brutal precision, the corrosive decline of our young democracy, weakened by corruption and its leaders' contempt for the rule of law. But his decision to stay is because of his love for South Africa - a love that even this most seasoned of scribes struggles to define or explain, but which so many of its citizens, myself included, have experienced.

I relished Ways of Staying author Kevin Bloom's appreciation that South Africa is the best possible place to map out his own identity. It is in this place of bewildering complexity and excitement, that the writer can determine his own place in the world.

Journalist Gillian Tucker's grappling with homesickness is understandable, but the conclusions drawn from her visit back to South Africa after living for 14 years in Canada, were not. She contrasts the opulence of her accommodation with the shoddy service she received. To her, this somehow embodies what South Africa has become. I found that strange - poor service is an issue in many parts of the world. Her bad luck to experience it both in Johannesburg and Cape Town is more indicative of insufficient research on TripAdvisor than a meaningful truth about the country.

I wondered whether this was merely the excuse she found for finding the country she had longed for no longer "worthy" of that longing. South Africa has changed hugely in the years since she left. In some ways it is a different country - one that she may simply no longer have an affinity to.

Another excruciating piece was by Barry Levy, who dedicates much of his article on establishing his anti-apartheid credentials and undoubtedly genuine love for South Africa. One wonders why he hadn't bolted back to Mzansi ages ago. He devotes merely a cryptic line to answer that - claiming "life had conspired against me". That doesn't wash.

I wonder whether, like Tucker, he can't quite come to terms with today's South Africa. Despite him loving it and wanting it to do well, perhaps there's a subconscious impulse to remain anchored in Australia's safe, if staid harbour, far from the storms and raging uncertainty that can beset his homeland.

Only one contributor (to my knowledge) was black - the indispensable Jacob Dlamini, whose eloquent musings in Business Day every week are a must read. The ensemble's lack of ethnic diversity amongst its contributors is my main gripe about the book. In some ways this is understandable. Emigrants tend to be from the middle class (those who can afford to leave if they want to), and because of our tragic history, that middle class is overwhelming white.

Nevertheless, there are many of a darker hue who have left South Africa. Some went during apartheid - apparently Golders Green in London is a haven for exiled ANC apparatchiks lacking the stomach to return home. Others went later: lured away to Perth and other pastures when the democracy dividend didn't quite deliver what had been hoped for - or because opportunities arose overseas that weren't available back home. It would have been nice to hear these voices.

Angst and political tones tend to shade South African emigration, regardless of why people have left. Perhaps this is because some of those that have left are embittered racists that can't bear blacks attaining political power after centuries of oppression. Then there are those who have gone because they've lost faith in the new South Africa - or in its capacity to provide a safe and secure environment for their families. Others (like me) have departed for more prosaic reasons -- I moved because I was offered a job here in London.

Regardless of the reasons for people leaving, South Africans - of all races - face huge uncertainties. They live, after all, in a country where crime is rampant, corruption has become endemic, law enforcement is toothless and basic services often remain inadequate or continue to deteriorate. Meanwhile, ruling party demagogues get away with murder (or at least urging it - "I'll kill for Zuma" springs to mind). If certain factions in the ANC have their way, then nationalism is on the cards, agricultural property rights are threatened, and media freedom is on the verge of being neutered.

Against this backdrop, staying or leaving is a valid conundrum for anyone with the means to consider it. But it is a conundrum made all the more complicated by the kind of place South Africa is. It is a nation of warmth and colour, vibrancy and breathtaking beauty. It also has superb quality of life (the space, the food, the weather!) for those privileged enough to afford it.

We easily forget that emigration - and migration generally - is a global phenomenon. As contributor Daniel Ford points out, most people don't have the same hang-ups about it - and leaving one's country is not interpreted as a sign of betrayal. Perhaps South Africans should attempt to be a little more liberated about this vexed issue. No one should feel forced to stay or go; it's up to them, and their own circumstances.

My favourite philosophical approach to emigration was summed up in the piece by peripatetic English teacher Anne Townsend. "Life," she wrote, "is just too short to spend it all in one place."

Julius Malema's dangerous personality cult

This is a striking example of a blind worshiper of a personality cult.

Just to illustrate their gullibility, one South African author passionately penned the following:

Centuries will pass, and the generations still to come will regard us as the happiest of mortals, as the most fortunate of men, because we lived in the century of centuries, because we were privileged to see Nelson Mandela, our inspired leader...

The men of all ages will call on thy name, which is strong, beautiful, wise and marvelous. Thy name is engraven on every factory, every machine, every place on the earth, and in the hearts of all men.

Every time I have found myself in his presence I have been subjugated by his strength, his charm, his grandeur. I have experienced a great desire to sing, to cry out, to shout with joy and happiness...

I write books. I am an author. All thanks to thee, O great educator, Nelson Mandela. I love a young woman with a renewed love and shallblinded educator, Nelson Mandela. I shall be eternally happy and joyous, all thanks to thee, great educator, Nelson Mandela. Everything belongs to thee, chief of our great country. And when the woman I love presents me with a child the first word it shall utter will be: Mandela."

The above was taken from the original article, but some words and names were replaced to bring us closer to home. The above version shows just how the liberals and the media generally made a cult of both Mandela, while it is now also being done with Malema.

The Gauteng Department of Health faces the possibility that it will have to pay R2-billion in compensation, a quarter of it for medical malpractice claims.

In the province's 2009-2010 annual report, "medico-legal claims" against the department were stated as R573-million, up from R447-million in the previous financial year.

Auditor-general Terence Nombembe raised concerns about the amount for which the department was successfully sued by victims of bad treatment and botched operations.

The biggest claim against the department was R1.5-billion in connection with the allegedly premature termination of contracts, two of which were with consultants.

The two contracts - with 3P Consultancy, valued at more than R200-million, and with the Bawoki Consortium, for a R1-billion computerised information system - were cancelled after a review by the new leadership of the department in April last year.

The Johannesburg High Court ordered the department to pay R10.4-million for services rendered by 3P Consultancy and to re-instate its contract with the company.

The department appealed and the matter is still before the court, according to the department's spokesman, Mandla Sidu.

Gauteng's MEC for health and social development, Qedani Mahlangu, said last year that her decision to cancel contracts signed by her predecessor, Brian Hlongwa, was "the right thing to do".

The DA's health spokesman in Gauteng, Jack Bloom, said the claims against the department were a concern.

He said the value of the contracts was not necessarily the amount for which the department would be liable if it lost in the high court. Hlongwa and 3P have consistently denied wrongdoing.

Adele van der Walt, a lawyer who specialises in medical malpractice claims, said increases in malpractice suits against doctors, nurses and hospitals could partly be ascribed to there being "more patients and fewer doctors".

The number of claims had increased in private and public healthcare, she said.

"Hospitals are understaffed and there are fewer qualified practitioners.

Only about 20% to 30% of nurses are qualified," she said.

The risk factors increased as the number of patients seeking medical attention increased, she said.

Taken together with the quality and availability of nursing staff, and of specialist doctors, it was a "challenge for medical services in South Africa".

The Sunday Times quoted the chief planner of the proposed national health insurance scheme, Olive Shisana, as saying that South Africa would recruit "thousands of doctors from other countries" to staff the scheme.

The scheme is intended to provide tax-funded cover to all citizens.

Bloom said it was not only claims and liabilities that were wreaking havoc with the department's budget: other provinces owed about R307-million to Gauteng.

People’s War - New Light on the Struggle for South Africa

People’s War: New Light on the Struggle for South Africa
4th December 2009

On Friday 27th November 2009 the Mail & Guardian published an attack on Anthea Jeffery’s new People’s War book. Her response (see below) was sent to the newspaper on Monday 30th November 2009 with a request that it be published with the same degree of prominence as the attack. Instead, the newspaper has failed to publish it at all.
Jeffery’s response:

Drew Forrest’s review of "People’s War: New Light on the Struggle for South Africa" is an unconvincing parody of my book. For Forrest seeks to explain away 540 pages of evidence about the ANC’s people’s war on the simplistic basis that my alleged ‘dizzy romance’ with Inkatha lies behind my supposed determination to ‘stretch the facts to fit my preconceptions’. [‘Polemic pretending to be history’, Mail & Guardian 27 November 2009]

His review is also an extraordinary perversion of the truth, for he asserts that the ‘people’s war’ was ‘largely a figment’. He thus ignores:
  • the ANC’s visit to Vietnam in 1978 to learn the formula for people’s war;
  • its decision to adopt that formula, reflected in the ANC document The Green Book: Lessons from Vietnam;
  • the determination made clear in The Green Book that the ANC would now embark on ‘a protracted people’s war’ in which opponents would be overcome via ‘a combination of political and military action’; and
  • a host of subsequent ANC broadcasts and publications further exhorting people’s war and, in time, praising the achievements of this strategy.

Forrest also implicitly asserts that the struggle was simply ‘a mass movement of ordinary South Africans’, led by the United Democratic Front (UDF), in which the ANC was largely confined to ‘cheering from the sidelines’. But this ignores the fact that:
  • the UDF was a puppet of the ANC (24 of the UDF’s 25-strong national executive committee being members of the ANC underground);
  • the ANC was unbanned and back inside South Africa when the people’s war intensified in the early 1990s and the death toll in political violence rose three-fold from what it had been in the 1980s.

To explain away this sudden surge in violence after political liberalisation, the ANC and its allies developed the Third-Force theory, which Forrest endorses too. According to this theory, state president F W de Klerk had a ‘dual strategy’ of talking peace while waging war: of pretending a commitment to negotiations while using the police and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to destabilise the ANC.

The obvious involvement of both the police and the IFP in political violence lent significant support to this theory. But the theory also has many weaknesses:
  • no credible evidence of De Klerk’s duplicity has ever been found, despite assiduous endeavour;
  • more than 800 policemen were killed in the early 1990s, many in premeditated ambushes, while thousands of IFP office-bearers and supporters were killed in similar ways; while
  • a Third Force that killed so many of its own made no sense at all, especially when neither the police nor the IFP drew advantage from the killings but were instead discredited and weakened by them.

By contrast (all of which Forrest overlooks):
  • the ANC had a declared ‘dual strategy’ of persisting with its people’s war after negotiations began for it saw the talks as nothing but ‘an additional terrain of struggle’;
  • the ANC had little compunction about attacking black civilians, including its own supporters, for the formula for people’s war draws no distinction between combatants and others and regards all civilians (irrespective of their political affiliation) as expendable in conflict;
  • the ANC had a motive to unleash violence, for it wanted to create enough mayhem and unrest either to spark an insurrection or to weaken its opponents to the point where it could triumph in negotiations;
  • the ANC had the means to unleash violence, for the peace process allowed it to bring back into South Africa some 13 000 armed and trained combatants whom it then refused to disarm or disband; and
  • the ANC was the only organisation to draw benefit from the 15 000 political killings that took place in the early 1990s (after all major apartheid laws had been repealed), for it used these to:
1. stigmatise De Klerk and the IFP,
2. stampede negotiators into giving it what Joe Slovo called ‘a famous victory’ in negotiations, and
3. put great pressure on the first all-race election, while making it unthinkable for anyone to demand a re-run of the deeply flawed April 1994 poll in which it was accorded (no accurate count being possible) some 63% of the vote.

Forrest also suggests that Inkatha was the principal villain in violence and that the book seeks simply to obscure this. But this ignores one of the most important of the lessons from Vietnam – that people’s war can be used not only against an incumbent government but also against all other rivals for power. Moreover, such rivals must be so weakened by the time of the transition as to give the insurgents hegemony and pave the way for the further stages of the revolution.

Against this background, it is not surprising that most of the violence was directed against Inkatha, which already had a million members in KwaZulu/Natal and on the Reef when the people’s war began and so posed the greatest obstacle to the ANC’s determination to dominate a post-apartheid South Africa. The IFP also bore the brunt of the casualties, for the police were correct in their analysis that ‘the ANC was waging an aggressive war’ against the IFP ‘by military means’ and that the IFP was ‘disadvantaged in its resistance’ because it ‘lacked the quantity and sophistication of the weaponry available to the ANC’.

Forrest also overlooks the violence directed at many other groups, all of which were targets for attack under the formula for people’s war. From 1984 to 1994, there was violence between the ANC and black councillors; between the ANC and the police; between the ANC and the Azanian People’s Organisation; between the ANC and the Pan-Africanist Congress; between the ANC and the locally influential Labour Party in Port Elizabeth; between the ANC and alleged ‘vigilantes’: in fact, moderate blacks tired of being coerced to take part in the ANC’s campaigns of mass action. Always it was the ANC that was the common denominator in the conflict.

To all of this, Forrest turns a determinedly blind eye. It is thus not my book but his review which is ‘a shallow polemic’. His real gripe is doubtless that the book succeeds too well in piercing the veil the ANC has drawn across our recent past.

Entire young white South African generation has left the country

The Institute for Race Relations reports that there's hundreds of thousands of young whites missing in South Africa. Newsweek also reports on the mass exodus of white, skilled families, asking: 'why are the brightest leaving this most successful state?"

The South African Institute for Race Relations says this week that the young white men -- aged 24 to 34 have mostly left the country now, and that there now are many more older white men than younger ones - when the reverse is the case in normal societies without wars.

There are two main reasons for this demographic oddity: the relentless murder campaign waged by heavily-armed, well organised black male gangs against white farmers: the latest murder toll is 3,038; together with the mass exodus of white, working-age families from South Africa ever since 1994 -- and which Digital Journal has also often reported about just recently. here http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/262718

This week's Newsweek feature article (http://www.newsweek.com/id/184783) by Scott Johnson , headlined "Fleeing from South Africa,' asks: ' Fourteen years after apartheid, why are the best and the brightest leaving Africa's most successful state?"

He writes: "The South African government doesn't keep reliable emigration statistics. But even as the global financial crisis has caused emigration from most other countries to slow, a number of recent independent studies show that mass departures from South Africa are ongoing and are sapping the nation of its skilled and best-educated young citizens.

"The most dramatic figures can be found among South African whites, who are leaving at a pace consistent with the advent of "widespread disease, mass natural disasters or large-scale civil conflict," according to a report by the South African Institute on Race Relations," he writes.

What Newsweek doesn't say however, is that more than 90% of all those 'whites' who have left, are actually Afrikaans-speakers, close-knit, often deeply religious members of a very distinct ethnic minority who view themselves as an independent nation, with their own language, culture and a very unique history. This exodus of 'whites' thus also marks the dissipation, the destruction of an entire ethnic minority in South Africa which has lived there since the 17th century. The young generation of Afrikaners is being forced out of the country of their birth, and not only face the heartbreak of leaving their beloved continent behind them forever, but also having to leave their aging parents behind.

Newsweek continues:
"Some 800,000 out of a total white population of 4 million have left since 1995, by one count," he reports, adding: : "...this wasn't supposed to happen.. but (emigration) has been accentuated by a violent crime epidemic, serious political upheaval and economic globalization. A poll conducted last May among 600 people of different races, ages and genders (in South Africa) found that 20 percent were leaving the country'.

Crime, murders, rapes:
"The primary driver for emigration among all groups, but especially whites (...) is fear of crime. With more than 50 killings a day, South Africa has one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world." Rape in South Africa as if it's a conflict zone
He continues: "The same goes for rape—ranking the country alongside conflict zones such as Sierra Leone, Colombia and Afghanistan. Future Fact polling indicates that more than 95 percent of those eager to leave South Africa rate violent crime as the single most important factor affecting their thinking. "Lynette Chen, the ethnic-Chinese CEO of Nepad Business Group, is the only member of her family left in South Africa. Her parents departed in 2002 after being carjacked—twice. Her brother, also a victim of crime, followed suit shortly thereafter. "They're always getting homesick," she says. "But they won't come back unless the crime is reduced."

White farmers attacked:
"Another largely unnoticed problem is the growing number of attacks on South Africa's white farmers. As in neighbouring Zimbabwe, some appear to be racially motivated. "Then there's the problem of affirmative action, which many whites feel limits their opportunities for advancement and which keeps many émigrés from returning. "You can attract people home, but there are still the same concerns when they get here," Chen says. The SAIRR spokesman Frans Cronjé slammed the Newsweek article's as 'putting South African in a poor light', especially over its comment that 'white South Africans leave the country at a pace consistent with the advent of "widespread disease, mass natural disasters or large-scale civil conflict,"

However, he also felt that the Newsweek article raised a very important issue, and that it created awareness of the fact that so many white well-educated citizens have left the country.'

"The article shows the seriousness of the brain drain - and that the underlying causes must be urgently addressed,' Cronjé said.

He also confirmed that most of the country's white South Africans aged between 24 to 40 have already left the country - some 750,000 -- since 1994. An entire generation of whites basically have now left the country, and there indeed are many more older white men, aged above 60 years, than young ones left in the country.

And now, a second wave of young emigrants is also beginning to leave, he said: young coloured and Indian families; together with the recent graduates among the black middle-class, are also departing.

However managing director Martine Schaffer of the Homecoming Revolution - launched by a South African banking group to try and lure its best customers back to the country -- slammed the report as 'last year's old news', describing it as sensationalised, inaccurate.."

Although her organisation does not maintain any registers to back up her claims, she says there is no real brain-drain. There was a brief exodus from South Africa after the election of Jacob Zuma as leader of the ANC, xenophobic attacks, and Zimbabwe's economic crisis, ' she told the Afrikaans weekly Rapport today.

South Africa Has Already Crashed

Sometimes vehicle accidents happen so fast that one cannot anticipate it, other times again one can see it coming and the driver then tries to avoid it by breaking, swerving, etc. If he is lucky he avoids the accident. It requires skill and experience to avoid most accidents. Some accidents are anticipated well in advance, but still cannot be avoided, like when the breaks fail, while the fuel pedal is stuck at the same time.

Only once the accident had happened do we realise what happened and what the dangers and consequences of the accident are. Only once the dust had settled do we realise how many people were in the car, that there is a baby in the back-seat, the fuel tank is leaking and the car may burst into flames. Only then can we assess the damage. Only then do we realise some are seriously injured and some are fine.

A bit later we realise the one that seemed fine is now coughing blood, which means internal bleeding and a possible life-threatening situation.

Afterwards we realise that besides the fact that the car was written off completely there are some positives, one could still use the left rear tyre and sell it for a few bucks. The price of iron had increased and we may get more for the vehicle at the scrap-metal dealer. Only later do we realise we had over-spent on the car, because the uninsured sound system is worth more than a third of the car's insured value. The alloy rims and expensive racing tyres, the custom paint job, etc. all money down the drain.

We are now also stuck with consequences of the crash, the lamp-post needs to be replaced at our cost, the ambulances and fire department will be sending us bills for their costs. The road is damaged and needs to be repaired. We are stuck without a car, a few broken bones, perhaps one or two dead and huge bills. To crown it all the driver is without a job without the means to pay for all the damages.

We also came to realise that while we thought we were good drivers we were not all that good and one should not speed with a poorly maintained vehicle. The outside appearance and available power is worthless, even dangerous, if the driver cannot handle the car and is not experienced in high-speed driving. This is the case with South Africa.

South Africa is not busy crashing, it has already crashed. We saw it coming and we realised it was unavoidable, because the fuel pedal was stuck and the breaks had failed, because of zero maintenance. At the same time the country was being driven by inexperienced show-offs, a classic recipe for disaster.

Few people saw it coming, because they were so impressed by the external appearance, the flashy life-styles and all the fancy additions to the vehicle that they never bothered to look a bit deeper.

This country had crashed. The water supply, never maintained, cannot meet the country's needs. The same with the electricity supply, the lack of infrastructure maintenance, the over-spending, the over-capitalisation, the incompetence, the lack of patriotism. The health services have cllapsed completed and there is nothing left of our world class roads.

The ANC was completely unskilled and inexperienced in any form of management, let alone government. Yet everyone cheered them, because they seemed so nice, so likeable. Their bragging, "sophisticated" appearance and their pretentious quasi-intelligence bluffed the ignorant masses into believing they are capable and in control.

In the meantime we are now experiencing the aftermath and consequences of the crash. Everything is collapsing all around us, while here-and-there we are being fooled by some positive move, which is nothing but the result of some external effect.

To build one new hospital, while 98% of hospitals have collapsed may seem positive, but it is not. To train a thousand nurses while less than 30% of existing nurses are unqualified is not positive. While building a highway through Gauteng may seem positive, but with the rest of the country’s roads having collapsed due to zero maintenance, it is not positive. Even the newly built highways are a pathetic disgrace, because they are breaking up and are already in serious need of repair,  which is not positive, unless you’re a stupid brainless fool.

A nation could only feel positive about the future of the country if everything that exists is being well maintained, while at the same time further development is taking place.

Stamping out corruption in two or three instances and blowing it out of proportion as a means to pretend you're doing something about corruption, while billions are being stolen unchecked every week, is not positive.

The public is being kept stupid by the media promoting the tiny number of so-called positives, which in most instances is not as a result of the Regime's efforts.

South Africa has crashed and we are only now seeing, feeling, living and experiencing the effects thereof. SA was on the road to collapse in 1989 already when FW de Klerk started his capitulation and finally crashed in the 1990's under Nelson Mandela who was not a leader, he was not a President, he was not a manager, he was nothing other than a mere media-made icon, a mantle-piece, all for the show and were polished on the outside only.

Not a single leader of this country since 1994 was a patriot, they all lived in luxury abroad for decades and came back to this country still thinking it was as it was when they had left in the early 1960's. They did not come back to build and grow SA, they came here to collect, like any and every other revolutionary movement in the history of the world.

The ANC had zero knowledge or experience of government and they stepped in, got rid of everyone that could see what they were doing. The ANC did not get rid of the whites, only because they were so arrogant as to think they could actually run a first world country by themselves. The ANC got rid of the whites, because they realised the experienced whites would see what they were up to and they did not want that obstacle to their theft, fraud and corruption. They needed to get rid of everyone that would or could notice what they were doing on the inside.

Further to this their genocide strategy could also not be hidden if there were so many whites around.

They came here with a plan and the plan was to get rid of whites, chase them from the country, kill them all off and steal the country bankrupt, which was their only plan. In the meantime they put up a show that impressed the likes of the ignorant liberals.

We see in the media talk of plans for growth and development, even from the side of the quasi-right, building this and growing that all the hope of reversing the clock to the day before the crash. Unfortunately that cannot be done.

Once the car had crashed the thieves move in to steal the watches, the cell-phones, the laptop computers in the boot and everything seemingly worthwhile inside the car. They steal the mirrors and the one or two rims still intact. They steal everything they could lay their filthy hands on, but then brag because they are giving the crashed car a new paint job, while everyone knows it is beyond repair and on its way to the scrap-metal dealer.

Only the dumbed-down brainless ignorants could see this as positive.
