Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer on Friday said criminals are ruling the country.
He said communities must become more involved in fighting crime if they are to win the war against criminals.
He addressed the grieving families of police officers, killed in the line of duty, since 2003.
“Over 500,000 criminals are ruling over 50 million South Africans and we need to take back our streets,” he said.
Lamoer told the audience that the problem was not unique to South Africa.
“A week ago I was in Chicago and they spoke about exactly the same thing. Their police officers are also killed by thugs and by their own members.”
Anne Pick attended the commemoration and prayer service to pay tribute to her late 38-year-old son.
Ashleigh Pick was a police reservist who dedicated his weekends to fighting crime.
In 2004, he attended a crime scene, but was knocked over by a drunk driver.
“That guy was very drunk. He knocked my son over and he died on the spot,” she said.
